I was honoured to return as a guest on the HerStory Podcast with the amazing Kylie King, Founder of the Australian Ladies in Business Initiative.

Photography Is More Than Just Taking Pictures

Photography isn’t just about images.

It’s about memory, history, and legacy.

We’ve documented our lives since the dawn of time — from cave paintings to family albums — because humans need to remember where they came from. Photos aren’t just for today. They’re for your children, your grandchildren, and generations who haven’t been born yet.

One day, someone will look at an image and say:

“That’s my great-great-great-grandparent — and this is what they looked like.”

That matters.

And yet today, so many images live only on phones, lost when devices break, data isn’t backed up, or accounts disappear. We take thousands of photos — but rarely create intentional memories.

That’s why professional photography still matters.

Even if it’s just one photo a year.

Even if it’s just one Christmas photo.

Even if it’s just one family portrait.

Because it becomes part of your story.


Why Business Branding Photos Are So Important

For business owners, branding photography is essential.

Stock photos don’t show you.

AI images don’t show you.

Outdated headshots don’t show you now.

In the episode, I shared why I don’t just take studio headshots. When I do branding sessions, I:

  • Photograph you doing your actual work
  • Capture you engaging with clients
  • Show your real environment
  • Tell the story of what you actually do

Because people don’t connect with generic images.

They connect with real humans doing real work.

Founder content is booming for a reason — people want to know who is behind the business.

Trust is built when your photos match reality.


One of the biggest topics we discussed was AI-generated images and AI headshots.

Yes — they’re fun.

But they also come with serious problems.

AI:

  • Changes facial structure
  • Alters body shape
  • Smooths and reshapes you
  • Creates a version of you that isn’t real

That creates a false narrative — and can unintentionally break trust with clients.

When someone meets you in person, and you don’t look like your AI image, it can create an unconscious sense of mistrust.

Not to mention the data and privacy risks that come with many of these apps.

A skilled photographer can:

  • Reduce blemishes
  • Soften skin
  • Help with lighting and angles
  • Make you look your best

Without changing who you are.

That’s the difference.


Body Image, Filters & Learning to Be Seen

We also talked honestly about something so many women struggle with:

👉 Not wanting to be in photos.

We’ve grown up with unrealistic beauty standards:

  • Airbrushed magazines
  • Altered celebrities
  • Digitally perfected bodies

Even supermodels don’t look like their photos.

In my business, I refuse to:

  • Make people thinner
  • Reshape faces
  • Alter bodies
  • Create unrealistic versions of my clients

I had a client once ask me to make his wife’s face thinner — and I said no.

Ethically and morally, I won’t do that.

You are beautiful as you are.

Your body has carried you through life.

It deserves respect — not digital erasure.

One day, your children and grandchildren will look at these photos.

They deserve to see you — not an edited version.


Why Being in Family Photos Truly Matters

One of the most emotional parts of our conversation was about family photos.

So many women are always:

  • Behind the camera
  • Taking photos of everyone else
  • Never in the frame

Kylie shared a story about a client who struggled to find a photo of her mother for the funeral. The only photo they had was her wedding photo — taken nearly 70 years earlier.

Seventy years of life.

Experiences.

Family.

Growth.

And none of it was documented.

That’s why I believe so strongly that:

  • Mums deserve to be in photos
  • Grandparents deserve updated photos
  • Families deserve memories that reflect real life

Not perfection.

Presence.


Teaching Kids to See the World: Shutterbugs & Snaply Media

We also talked about my passion for getting kids involved in photography.

Children see the world differently.

Their perspective is creative, honest, and beautiful.

That’s what inspired my book and program — including Shutterbugs and Snapling Media — designed to:

  • Encourage kids to take photos
  • Build creativity and confidence
  • Learn storytelling through images
  • Connect with their families

You don’t need fancy cameras.

A phone is enough.

It’s about helping kids (and adults) learn to see differently.


My Advice for Booking a Photographer

If you’re booking a photographer, my biggest tips are:

  • Read reviews
  • Check pricing transparency
  • Avoid hidden costs
  • Be clear on what you want
  • Share a shot list
  • Make sure their style matches your vision

A good photographer will:

  • Ask questions
  • Understand your goals
  • Tailor the session to you
  • Care about the outcome

You deserve photos that feel like you.


Final Thoughts

In a world moving toward AI, filters, and perfection, choosing authenticity is powerful.

Real photos.

Real people.

Real stories.

Whether it’s for your business, your family, or yourself, you deserve to be seen as you truly are.
